the Texas heat, sans Texas rain

No rain. Thirty-five days of no rain.
Thirty-five days of no rain, and temperatures that reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit last Tuesday. Clear blue Texas skies, without even a few clouds for shade or hope. There was a promise of a thunderstorm a couple times - last week we heard thunder; today the forecast lied.
Still no rain.

No rain means dead grass, dry leaves.
I will not be smiling if I can't light some fireworks.

So now everyone's crossing their fingers - the barometric pressure seems to be going up, so maybe we'll get a tropical or something. I'd be fine with a hurricane.

vegetarian! candy sushi: best of both worlds

Edit! Robin of Ocular Harmony pointed out that the candy and rice alternative makes it all vegetarian! Woo! (I mean, I love my meat and all, but it's a cool idea.)

Let's be honest: Sushi is gross. If you like it, you are weird (I'm looking at you, my-eight-year-old-brother). But no matter. We (should) all agree that candy is better than sushi, and after coming to that conclusion, we may move on to better things.

Like making a hybrid of the two (sorta like the African Killer Bees, or those nifty little cars that make no sound whatsoever).

Pictures courtesy of my eleven year-old sister and a very moody camera. Idea blatantly stolen from Mommy Knows blog. Her pictures are much better, so read mine first.

The camera gives an amazing display of its focusing abilities. Now everyone, ignore the water bottle and admire the almost-square of the rice crispy treat in the background. (I'm going to buy a better camera, I promise.)

Also notice the already-made sushi in the corner. These pictures make no chronological sense whatsoever. Or any other kind of sense.

What you will need (assuming you are going to try this project):

  • home made rice crispy treats. Add a few extra marshmallows to be sure it doesn't get too crispy and then flatten the out in a pan.
  • candy licorice, gummy worms, and jujube fish
  • fruit roll-ups (the green ones are preferable as that's what color sushi generally is. Here I've used whatever we found in the pantry)
  • children. Who else is supposed to eat the scraps?

Now pretend you have a picture of me cutting the Twizzlers and gummy worms, arranging them on the square of flattened rice crispy treats, and rolling.

Now pretend that roll is in the picture below, getting ready to be rolled into that fruit roll-up I'm unrolling from its roll.

Roll it up nice and tight (be careful not to roll the rice crispy/worm combo more than once as it'll get too thick and such, so trim the excess with a knife or scissors [clean them first!]), and slice into sushi slices. Don't eat it yet.

Because you will have leftovers to finish off. See the little rice crispy treat pieces? They will become flat sushi things, and that's where the fishies (excuse me, sea kittens) come in. Chop your excess treats into leetle squares, like so:

Add fish.

Wrap with leftover fruit roll-ups (or break into a new pack and eat the excess yourself).

Ta-da! You now have candy sushi.
And not so much as a decent picture of it. For shame.

lists of 7: reasons why I have not been blogging

Alternate title: Tiph Gets Off the Internet.

1. It all started because of the Oklahoma trip. I got out of the habit of staying up late and blogging at one in the morning, so when I came home, I was sorta "meh" about the whole thing again. I had things to do during the day, and I had to re-train myself to stay up past midnight. Once I got into a routine again, I found myself spending my late hours drinking tea and reading books. (That is part of my plan to get America to kick me out and the UK to let me in!!)

2. I sorta started to write a CSS layout for the blog.
I pretty much stopped, but it's still there in the back of my head and in the middle of one of my sketchbooks. I am determined to finish it!

3. I used midnight hours to clean house.
When everyone is asleep, no child is there to ruin what I just picked up. And it's quiet, and dark, and I have tea... :D

4. I made desserts!
And Dutch food, and french bread. Not everyone liked the french bread idea, though, as someone said I could just go to the store and buy it. Not going to mention any names or anything.

5. I wrote more.
It sounds almost counter-intuitive, but I found that when I'm not blogging a lot, I use that writing energy to do other things, like short stories! But now I'm done with that (for now), so maybe I WILL blog more!

6. I opened an Etsy shop!!
Find the Cirrus Cards shop here, and support the economy! :D There aren't very many cards listed (there's a fee for every item I list), so if you don't see something you want, feel free to ask.

7. I'm just lazy, sometimes.
Sometimes I prefer to read a magazine and draw circles on scrap paper than get online. Tons of things have been going on, so it's nice to have some time where I don't have to do ANYTHING, not even blog. But don't worry, I'm back! (probably)

little ones

Good morning boys and girls, and welcome to today's edition of Tiph Likes Caffeine.

Yesterday and today I have been mostly sick. Just a random cold type thing, and now it's gone! That means I had a whole three days worth of sleep and now it's time to expend all that energy on the internet!

A couple exciting things happened recently. Remember when my dog's girlfriend Daisy managed to come home from the pound?

She was apparently accepted back into the society of her original family, and two days ago, a girl showed up telling us that she had our dog's puppies. Sorry for the fuzzy pic, the lighting was really bad.

Two of them have six toes, the Great Pyrenees trademark, and all of them are white. A couple are fluffy. For having a little yellow lab for a mom, they're big puppies. And they are so. cute.

The same day we found out about the puppies, we found out about these:

My cat, Joy, had four little kittens. They're healthy and fat little ones, so we're happy.

Tune in next time for a new Lists of 7 post. It's about time I got another one of those up.

an important announcement.

Please remain seated; Sharpie Chronicles will return to it's regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

who i am!

Tiph used to be this weird hippie chick who sewed things and drank tea and rode bikes and wrote silly things. Then, college came along, and now she's this weird hippie chick with math in her brain and notebooks full of indefinite integrals. And hardly any time to write. This is her space. Thankfully, space is a vacuum and any complaints you may have cannot be heard.

Woo! You reached the End of the Page! You rock. Bored yet? If not, click the handy-dandy next button up there (it's there, right?), but otherwise, visit my Flickr page or my Etsy shop. Also, don't forget to subscribe to the blog before you go!

About a third of the credit for this template goes to The rest of that fraction goes to Tiph's incessant tinkering and exploding the CSS 'til it worked.
